And then there were six…
This week on “American Idol” the remaining singers will perform two songs – one by the legendary British rock band Queen and one of their choosing.
Surviving Queen membersand Roger Taylor sat down and talked with the Idols about confidence, success, and of course the music. Queen last visited the Idol stage for the grand finale of season eight when finalists and rocked it out with the band. Before the competition begins, May and Taylor join the singers on stage for a Queen medley that included the biggest football cheering anthem of all time “We Will Rock You”.
Up first is Jessica with her version of the 1975 hit “Bohemian Rhapsody”. Jessica’s performance begins in black and white and changes to colour when the tempo changes. Steven said that Freddie would have been proud of that performance; but Steven noted rock is not Jessica’s forte. Jennifer said that Jessica sounded beautiful but wanted to see some rock performance. Randy said that he actually loved it.
Skylar takes on “The Show Must Go On”. Steven said it was over the top with energy and passion; adding the performance was fabulous. Jennifer said, “I got goosies on that one;” adding that the performance was powerful. Rand called Skylar’s performance incredible, one of her best performances, and phenomenal.
Joshua rockedthe stage with “A Crazy Little Thing Called Love” and got a standing ovation from the judges for his efforts. Randy called the performance unbelievable; adding that Joshua is so ready and reminds him of Sam Cooke. Randy called Joshua a youngdude in the making. Jennifer said that Joshua is her favourite of the singers; adding that he always gives a great performance with inspired vocals. Steven said that Joshua has such a classic style and sounds like nobody else; adding that Freddie would have loved it.
Elise performed the Brian May penned hit “I Want it All”. Steven said Elise found her stride and sang it like the classic song it is. Jennifer said that Elise was in her element and it all came together. Randy said, “what a night so far, who’d a thunk it.” He called the performance unbelievable and one of Elise’s best performances so far.
Sans his guitar, Phillip rocks the stage with “Fat Bottom Girls”. Steven said Phillip did it again; adding that he loves to watch Phillip sing and Phillip has character like nobody else. Jennifer loves that Phillip gives them different flavours; adding that that is the mark of a great singer. Randy said that he liked the performance but wasn’t jumping up and down over it. Hostsaid that in all of the shows he has done – 400 – he has never seen Randy jump up and down.
The last performance in the Queen round was from Hollie with the hit “Save Me”. Steven said that he loves the way Hollie sings and thought she did a really good job. Jennifer noted that she felt a little emotion from Hollie but advised her on just performing and having fun with the song. Randy called it a good solid performance from Hollie.
Jessica kicks off round two with “Dance with My Father” by Luther Vandross; Jessica dedicated the song to her father who is preparing to be deployed. Jennifer said that that was the most beautiful she has ever heard that song performed. Steven said that Jessica couldn’t sing a bad song; adding it was a joy and pleasure to watch Jessica grow. Randy remarked on how amazed he was with the talent this season and all of the singers are ready to jump on the charts. He said that Jessica is an amazing natural talent.
Skylar brought her guitar for “Tattoos on this Town” – a song she dedicated to her home town. Randy said that he is a gimormous fan; adding that Skylar is fearless, has fun, and it was another great performance. Jennifer Jennifer noted on how comfortable Skylar is on stage; adding Skylar, “took us there again.” Steven said ditto on what they said; adding that Skylar can do no wrong.
Joshua slows things down a bit with “Ready for Love” and earns his second standing ovation of the night from the judges. Randy said that he doesn’t even know what to say calling it another unbelievable performance; Randy added that Joshua is way beyond his age in experience and talent. Jennifer also said that she doesn’t know what to say; adding that the song was transcendent and Joshua draws everybody in. Steven said that he goes to another place when Joshua sings; adding that he hopes the label find Joshua some good songs. Backstage Skylar revealed that Joshua has had 12 standing ovations this season.
Elise channelsbut not one of his more familiar songs. Steven said that he loved the Janice Joplin in Elise and he loves Hendrix but cautioned Elise on choosing songs that are familiar. Jennifer said that she felt like Elise slayed the song; adding that Elise is one of the best singers in the competition. Randy said that he is a huge Hendrix fan and a huge Elise fan but it was not the right song for Elise and he felt like Elise was boxing with the song.
Phillip is frequently being compared to South African rocker. For his second song Phillip again donned his guitar are performed a Dave Matthews song. Steven called the performance very entertaining, very off the wall, and typical Phillip Phillips. Steven added that he loves that Phillip takes chances. Jennifer felt the song was too obscure and artsy; adding that she wants Phillip to choose songs that will get him to the last week and the win. Randy disagreed with Jennifer saying the performance showed Phillip’s true colours and is an artist; Randy added die, sink, or swim Phillip will always be Phillip.
The final performance of the night was from Hollie performing “The Climb” by Miley Cyrus and earned herself a standing ovation from the judges. Randy said that was the Hollie they loved and Hollie is back. Randy said the performance was beautiful and the perfect song for Hollie. Jennifer said that Hollie really stepped it up and it was perfect. Steven said Hollie sings like it’s going out of style.
