India cancels a marriage between two children from 1 to 3 years

Jodhpur teen, married at 2, fights child marriage

A union between two children of one and three years ago decided seventeen years by their families was canceled after the discovery by the young woman, now aged 18, from her forced marriage.

Child marriage is illegal in India but this case highlights the persistent culture for such unions in rural communities of traditional India, who hope to improve the financial security of every family involved with the system dot.

There are seventeen, Sargara Laxmi was married to Rakesh unknowingly, now aged 20, in the State of Rajasthan after their families had decided that as adults they live together and have children. After the first procedure of this type, their marriage was declared legally void Tuesday in Jodhpur, in a context of increased campaign against forced marriages of children.

"Child marriage is illegal, said Laxmi Sargara the Times of India . I was advised to go to court under Article 10 of the Hindu Marriage Act. "

When she discovered she was married, she went to consult a social worker, Kriti Bharti, the head of the association Sarathi Trust , Jodhpur, which campaigns for the rights of children. Mr. Bharti then went to talk to the groom, Rakesh, and with two families to persuade them that this was an unjust marriage.

For its part, the young woman explained that her husband's family was pressuring her to come live with them. "But I want to finish my studies and work," she added. "It is to my knowledge the first example of a married couple wanting children that their union is canceled and I hope others will follow, "said Ms. Bharti.
