Jennifer Hudson Takes Stand in Family's Murder Trial; Emotional Testimony

Skooter reporting 04/25/12

Jennifer Hudson took the center stage Monday in the trial of the man charged with killing her mother, brother and nephew. As the first witness for the prosecution, the actress delivered a teary, enthralling performance.

On Tuesday, Hudson was in the audience and the trial began solemnly with Chicago police Sgt, David Dowling describing the ghastly scene when he found the bodies.

The ex-husband of Hudson's sister, William Balfour is charged with murdering three members of the Hudson family in October 2008. The victims were Hudson's mother, Darnell Donerson; brother Jason Hudson and 7-year-old nephew Julian King were shot.

The motive of the shooting was jealousy, the prosecution said. The killing incident occurred the day after Julia's birthday. Balfour became mad by balloons he saw at the home that he thought were from her new boyfriend, the prosecutors believed

Since there are no witnesses, the crux of the matter of the case will be the evidence, starting with cellphone records and security-camera footage to determine Balfour’s whereabouts. Meantime the defense is hoping to use DNA testing to prove that Balfour couldn't have used the murder weapon which is a .45 cal. handgun.

On Monday, Hudson and her sister, Julia took the stand. Hudson told the court how the family was against Balfour’s marriage to Julia. Hudson’s testimony that lasted more than 30 minutes was emotional and often tearful.

The 911 call recording that Julia Hudson made after discovering her mother's body was played by the prosecution..
