Iran displays purported US drone

Intelligence and technological war between the United States and Iran continues for the last couple of years. Both the countries remain suspicious to each other’s designs and have been taking measures and counter measures against each other to avert possible threats to their security. On Sunday, an Iranian top military official claimed having reverse-engineered a captured US drone and retrieved all the data from it for further use. The country brought down the drone in December last year and it was identified as US RQ-170 Sentinel.

Shortly after the Iranian claim of bringing down a US spying drone, the Obama administration has admitted that one of the US drones went missing in the area. The US officials also asked Iran to return wreckage of the drone but the latter denied. General Amir Ali Hajizadeh, Chief of Aerospace Division of power Revolutionary Guards of Iran revealed operational history of the drone to prove his claim of retrieving all the relevant data from the predator. He also revealed some of the past missions of the drone citing the data that Iranian scientists have retrieved from the spying predator.

One of the past missions of the drone, General Amir Ali Hajizadeh said, was surveillance of the compound in Pakistan where Osama Bin Laden lived for five years and killed. The terror kingpin was living in Abbottabad – a garrison city some 130 kilometers from federal capital, Islamabad – where he was shot dead on May 2 last year by the US Navy Seals team in a midnight operation. Iranian general also revealed maintenance and other operational tours of the drone to prove his claim of having all the expertise to deal with the modern technology.

The Revolutionary Guards’ general has also termed the captured drone as one of the national assets and said the scientists are working to build a replica of the technology. Obviously, it is disturbing for the United States that one of its adversaries has reverse-engineered the drone. The more worrying is the fact that Iranian scientists can hijack the operations of drone strikes as they have got their hands on one of the drones used in different spying operations. On the other hand, Iran has been flaunting the bringing down of the predator and appears all set to confront the United States on technological front as well.

Tensions between both the countries have already reached to a peak on controversial nuclear program of Iran. The United States and its allies including Israel believe that Iran is trying to develop atomic bomb that can disturb the regional security balance. Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has repeatedly warn the US and Israel for launching a full fledge war against them if they tried to hamper atomic program of the country. The cold war is going on and we hope the sanity will prevail soon to resolve all the issues through dialogue and negotiations.
