A horrible train collision on Saturday took place in Amsterdam between two trains, injuring 125 people.
Amsterdam has a well-laid train network, but when there is a train accident, the devastation is huge, since trains carry a lot of people in comparison to cars or busses.
The train collision that took place was between two local trains, both coming from opposite directions. Due to the collision, a total of 125 people were injured, but out of those 125, around 43 or 44 were badly injured, while others suffered mild injuries. Out of all of the passengers injured, around 70 suffered minor injuries.
As soon as the accident took place, there was panic in the area, but despite the panic situation, the rescue operations took place very smoothly. "We heard a loud bang. I went outside and saw people on the street in panic," a woman at the scene told broadcaster AT5, according to a report by MSNBC.com. "We then saw what had happened. Quite quickly there were emergency services at the scene. It was managed well. Some people had head wounds, others were limping."
The train collision took place between an inter-city train and a local stopping service train. It took place at around 18:30 local time. A very loud bang was heard when the trains collided and soon after the accident, rescue workers arrived at the scene. Those people who were in serious condition and were seated deep into the train were lifted with the help of cranes, whereas the people who had suffered minor injuries were taken away by paramedics in ambulances, which were waiting close by. A trauma helicopter was also used to bring the injured to the hospital. The train collision took place in a busy area of the city, and due to the accident, the traffic was disrupted for a while and other trains were delayed. Even though the trains did not serve the Schiphol international airport, the accident still disrupted the airport train service.
It is not clear how the train collision took place. The government has ordered a thorough investigation into the case.
All those who were injured in the train accident will be looked after properly in the hospital. Most of the injuries were related to broken bones, cuts and bruises.
