Up to 20 other people were seriously injured in the accident

At least 125 people were injured, including over 50 seriously, when two passenger trains collided head-on in Amsterdam on Saturday, international media quoted local police as saying.

Of those injured, 13 people suffered major injuries and more than 40 others were seriously hurt, a police spokesman said. Many of those injured suffered bone fractures.

The trains collided on a railway bridge between the Dutch capital's main station Amsterdam Central and Amsterdam Sloterdijk train station.

The cause of the accident was immediately unclear after the head-on smash.
