The success of 21 Jump Street could lead to another popular Stephen J. Cannell show coming to the big screen with Vince Vaughn set to star in Universal Pictures' proposed remake of The Rockford Files.
Co-created by Cannell and Maverick creator Roy Huggins, it aired on NBC from 1974 to 1980 with Emmy winner James Garner as Jim Rockford, the easygoing ex-con turned private detective who rather solve problems with his mouth and not with fists and guns. Garner reprised the role in several made-for-TV movies for CBS throughout the mid-1990s.
Several years ago, NBC attempted to revive the character with a pilot written by House creator David Shore with Dermot Mulroney as Rockford and Beau Bridges playing his father Rocky. The response was mixed, though, and the pilot wasn't picked up.
All six seasons of the original series are available on DVD.
