Seattle Washington. The Cleveland Indians announced Tuesday the signing of free agent outfielder Johnny Damon, 38, to a minor league contract.
Damon has played 17 seasons in the Major Leagues. Damon played last year with the Tampa Bay Rays before he became a free agent this winter. He did not attend spring training.
Damon will be working out at the Cleveland spring training facility in Goodyear Arizona. He will be playing extended spring training games, play with the AAA Columbus Indians minor league team before he joins the Indians in May.
Cleveland Indians manager Manny Acta says Damon will be sharing left field duties with Shelley Duncan. Damon will be paid a salary of $1.25 million plus $1.4 million in bonus incentives. Damon's contract has a clause that can get him released to play for another team if he is unhappy with his playing time in Cleveland or does not fit within the team plans.
