Exciting history is in the making as I type. The Shuttle Discovery is on it's way to Washington DC from Florida on the back of a giant Boeing 747. Seen on CNN Live coverage, it is a spectacular sight to behold and crowds are now gathered to witness this final journey.

It's now 9:50 a.m. and the shuttle, looking tiny on the back of the behemoth Boeing, is still cruising on the fly-over, making its way to International Airport of Dulles after taking off from the Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral on Tueday morning. Discovery left about 2 hours ago amid cheers, singing and tears from over 2000 spectators and NASA workers. The fleet leader Discovery is being transported to the Smithonian National Air and Space Museum, where it will spend its retirement after an impressive 148 million miles of travel including 39 orbital missions--ending a memorable era.

According to the Science Monior, Discovery will take the place of another veteran, Enterprise, which in turn will go to New York. Endeavor will go to Los Angeles and Atlantis will remain at Kennedy.

The Shuttle is at this very moment flying over the Washington Mall and spectators are excitedly straining their eyes skyward, anxiously awaiting its arrival. It is scheduled to land around 10:15. A reported 5 pilots are flying the modified Boeing and Shuttle.

Helicopters are now hovering over Dulles as the shuttle prepares to land. The T38 which was accompanying the Boeing and Shuttle has just touched down.

Discovery finally touched down at Dulles at 11:05 A.M., almost an hour after its scheduled arrival.

Stay tuned for more.
