If the recent debacle in Colombia has taught us anything it would most certainly be a lesson in the sins of vice. Both Harper and Obama limped home chastised by Latin America for their very "retro" views on drug policy and Cuba bashing. Perhaps if North Americanos were not so busy puffing and snorting so much of Latin America's "products" our politicos would have a sane & sober leg to stand on. But, for the time being, it looks like we can all look forward to an upward trend on incarceration while the cartels and the DEA get rich off the customers? It also sheds some light on why Harper's Conservative government in Ottawa is hell bent on building new prisons and buying brand new fighter jets. All those newly laid-off civil servants can now find jobs as guards at all those profitable prisons that are being planned...perhaps a good career choice for the 1,100+ Border Services folks who just got the axe?
The present stalemate with regards to the "War on Drugs" is rich with irony. Once regressive and corrupt Latin American countries wish to liberalize their drug laws in order to curtail the violence and profits endemic on their end; while "democratic" neighbours to the North want to continue down the path of prohibition. Drug lords and prison planners are now rubbing their hands with glee.
Perhaps deceased singersaid it best when he suggested to "send lawyers, guns and money" south..instead of common sense. Perhaps you can throw in a few Contras and helicopters into the bargain...just leave the Secret Service at home!
Truly..the shit HAS hit the fan!
Say hello to my little friend...again.
