2012 Laurence Oliver Award Winners

As the American Theatre prepares for the annual Tony Award nominees announcement, the Oliver Awards presented their annual awards from the Royal Opera House in London on April 15.

This year the Laurence Oliver Awards presented awards to the youngest winners in awards history – the recipients were between the ages of 10 and 12. Michael Ball and Imelda Staunton from “Sweeney Todd” host the 2012 Oliver Awards.

Among the performances during the evening was Queen guitarist who joined the cast of “We Will Rock You” for a performance of “Bohemian Rhapsody”, and musical tributes to lyricist Sir Tim Rice and Royal Ballet Director Dame Monica Mason – who is leaving the company. Other musical performance were cast members of “Matilda the Musical” and “Ghost the Musical.

Best Set Design: Rob Howell for “Matilda the Musical”

Best Actor: Benedict Cumberbatch and Jonny Lee Miller for their roles in “Frankenstein”

Best Lighting Design: Bruno Poet for “Frankenstein”

Best Sound Design: Simon Baker for “Matilda the Musical

Outstanding Achievement at an Affiliate Theatre: “Roadkill” at the Theatre Royal Stratford East

Best New Dance Production: the Akram Khn Company for “Desh”

Outstanding Achievement in Dance: Edward Watson for his performance in “The Metamorphosis”

Best Director: Matthew Warchus for “Matilda the Musical”

Best Actress: Ruth Wilson for her role in “Anna Christie at he Donmar Warehouse”
