After the Miami Marlins defeated the Philadelphia Phillies 6-2 yesterday in Philadelphia, Marlins manager Ozzie Guillen was on a plane back to Miami. The reason is that the organization scheduled a press conference to start at 10:30 AM EST this morning.
In a recent Time Magazine article, Guillen stated that he loved Fidel Castro. Usually, Guillen will say something controversial, but it usually blows over after a few days. However, he really put his foot into his mouth with this quote.
How could he say that he loves Castro? Castro has kept the entire nation of Cuba under Communist bondage for over 50 years. The oppression is so bad that thousands of Cubans risked their lives by coming over to Miami in makeshift rafts.
How could he say that he loves Castro when Little Havana is in Miami? That's a big chunk of the fan base. Cubans are heated right now. Over two thousand people will be protesting at the new stadium during the protest. Cuban protest groups claim that they will protest until Guillen is fired. However, they may not obtain that wish because the Marlins organization is strapped for cash after having the new stadium built.
How could he say that he loves Castro? When Guillen was a manager of the Chicago White Sox, he coached players that defected from Cuba: Jose Contreras, El Duque Rodriguez, and Alexei Ramirez. He saw what they had to go through from a personal level. Guillen's apology needs to be real good or he will be out of job soon.
Millions of people have been waiting for Fidel Castro to die, but he won't. He must have some sort of rejuvating powers like Wolverine or Benjamin Button that he has only shared with Venezuela President Hugo Chavez.
