Community leaders: Shooting spree a hate crime

Skooter reporting 04/08/12

A manhunt was launched by authorities in Tulsa, in the US state of Oklahoma, after strings of shootings which police say may have been hate crimes. Within hours of each other on Friday, five attacks occurred, killing three and seriously wounding two others, within a three-mile (5km) radius.

The victims were all black; the police are looking for a white male in connection to the attacks and that he was driving a white pick-up truck. He was seen in the area of three of the shootings.

The crimes committed recently have stunned people living in a fairly quiet part of north of Tulsa, and it was feared that the killer may strike again. Community leaders have tried to down play fears of further attacks.

It was reported that detectives are asking people to help them, but that many in the community lost their trust to police. The FBI also has joined the manhunt to investigate the killings, including a city councilor for the district Jack Henderson encouraged people to come forward with information.
