Boy Set on Fire

Another hate crime, but this time it appears nobody in the mainstream media noticed.

Just days after the tragedy that claimed the life of Trayvon Martin, a young boy, only 13 years of age, was assaulted by two 16-year-olds in Kansas City, Mo., and then set aflame. The boy was walking home from school at about 3 p.m., when he apparently realized two older teens were following him.

In the words of his mother, "They rushed him on the porch as he tried to get the door open... (one of them) poured the gasoline, then flicked the Bic, and said, 'This is what you deserve. You get what you deserve, white boy.'"

The perpetrators are still being sought; the only thing known at present, is that they are black. It's believed they may attend the same school as the victim, Kansas City's East High School. The victim was white...

Why is the media silent? Why is there no outrage from every direction, as with Trayvon? In this case, we know exactly what happened; it was racism, pure, simple, and ugly beyond words; there is not doubt this was a hate crime; why hasn't President Obama opened his mouth to decry this incredibly savage attack? Where are the New Black Panthers calling for the death of the two thugs who burned an innocent child in the name of racial hatred and supreme ignorance?

There's an old adage in journalism that says "if it bleeds, it leads...". Maybe it's time to modify that. I guess if the victim is black, it leads by leaps and bounds; if the victim is just a white kid on his way home from school, it gets dumped.

I was amazed by the outpouring of outrage on video blogs, some of them by individuals of color (see above), but nothing in the media. Maybe I missed it. ...or maybe it just shows the true "colors" of our media.

Let me be clear; this is not a black issue; this is not a white issue; this is an American issue. When the news is only news when it's consistent with the clear political ideology and agenda of those who control the media, it's simply wrong. In this case, it would have been just as wrong regardless of the race of the victim, or the perpetrators.

Wake up America... if it's wrong, it's wrong; if it's right, it's right; the significance of the issue should't be dictated by the race, creed, religion, or gender of either the victim or the suspects. Demand that the media stop spinning everything we see, hear or read. Let them know you want the news... the real news, not just what the media puts up to further their own mindless agenda (left or right).

So sorry to hear what happened to this child--it is despicable. I think every life is precious and the media has done a poor job of being fair in many cases. However the wall to wall Coverage of the Trayvon Tragedy is not the norm but the anomaly. Coverage of our Black men in the news usually veer towards the criminal. The bias in the media is nothing new and the lack of coverage for this young boy's plight is not because the media suddenly likes to cover tragedies of people of color.

Thanks for your comments Veronica. I'm not sure I agree with you. the Trayvon case is still up in the air as to exactly what happened. The media jumped straight out of the woodwork, as did President Obama. When was the last time you say that happen for white person? I'm asking sincerely. Are you comfortable with the media being the judge and jury in cases where they don't have all the facts, and make it very difficult for the suspect to get the fair trial he's entitled to by law, or are you taking the attitude of Judge Roy Bean who is credited with saying the men who came before his court were entitled to a speedy trial followed by an equally speedy hanging?

I remember Johnny Storm of the Fantastic Four cartoon in the 1990s saying something like revenge never cures any wounds it only worsens them. I guess these people do not realize revenge never heals any wounds. It only worsens them.
