There seems to be no let-up yet in the way men of the Nigeria Police Force brutalise harmless members of the public as a policeman in Lagos yesterday battered an artisan who refused to let him seize his wares.
Our reporter learnt that the incident occured only one day after armed policemen forcefully arrested and brutalised six judiciary correspondents in the premises of Ikeja Magistrate’s Court.
The incident which took place at Adegbola Street caused a minor traffic jam as some groups of artisans plying their trade in the area chose to have their own pound of flesh by breaking the glass windows of the towing vehicles which the police officers came with.
According to the victim, Ola, a motor cycle repairer, he was not feeling well so he decided to lie down at his shop and not long afterwards, some policemen came with towing vehicles demanding to seize the motor cycles at his shop.
He blatantly refused because he claimed they were not assigned to perform that function only for the policeman named Sheriff to hit the artisan with a big stick and blood gushed out.
“I don’t know what my offence was as they are not Kick Against Indiscipline (KAI) officials and have no right to seize my wares. He hit me on the head for no just reason; perhaps I would have fainted and died. I am going to the police station to file my complaint”, he lamented
Another artisan, named John attributed the reason for the seizure of their wares the refusal to part with some money. He said that the policeman did not make their offence known and went ahead to seize their motor cycle spare parts. A Patrol vehicle was seen later at the area to prevent the fracas from going worse.
Lagos police spokesman, Joseph Jaiyeoba says he is not aware of the incident.
