Pampanga penitents and flagellants (part 1 of 3)

Twenty (20) penitents are expected to be nailed in the wooden crosses in three-barangays of San Fernando, Pampanga Philippines starting 2pm today (April 6, 2012) in a traditional Good Friday ritual. This is the 50th annual crucifixion rites that has been mobbed by 40,000 to 50,000 foreign and local nationalities who’d like to witness this re-enactment of Jesus Christ’s crucifixion.

“I am encouraging locals and tourists to use this opportune time to discover San Fernando’s places of solitude by visiting churches found in this city,” Mayor Oscar Rodriguez said.

While Pampanga's Archbishop Paciano Aniceto said that, “The Church asks you to deny yourself through mortification, prayer and sacrifice. So it is more of self-control rather than physical infliction on our body".
