Pope Benedict XVI, he has expressed his proximity towards the ‘victims of the Mines Antipersonnel.' The date of April 4 was promoted by the General Assembly of the United Nations to reject the indiscriminate use of this type of devices. And to create conscience on the threat that represent for people. Unfortunately, instead of subsiding, they have gone in increase.
After Afghanistan, Colombia is the country with more number of new victims in the world. The year 2010 had 512 victims of mines antipersonnel; from 1990 to February of 2011, have been counted 9.133 kill, of these 3.408 civilians and 5.725 military. For if these figures have not made jag in their consciences: 870 were children.
Therefore it is to be with those you kill and the Sacred Father's words, belong to it but opportune: "to all those that make an effort to liberate the humanity of these terrible and deceiving explosive, those which, like devout John Paul II said with occasion of the entrance in vigor of the Convention on the prohibition of the employment of mines antipersonnel, they impede to the men 'to walk together on the paths of the life without fearing destruction ambushes and death' ".
As we will remember the 'Treaty of Ottawa or the Convention on the prohibition of mines antipersonnel' whose name official is: Convention on the Prohibition of the Use, Stockpiling, Production and Transfer of Anti-Personnel Mines and on their Destruction. This treaty prohibits the acquisition, the production, the storage and the utilization of mines antipersonnel. 1 March of 1999, went into effect.
