In Greece, we are now seeing the effects of austerity reach horrific levels. Earlier today, a 77 year old Greek pensioner stood outside of parliament in Syntagma Square in Athens. He began to exclaim about how the spending cuts have led to his demise. He stated, "I refuse to scrounge for food in the rubbish, ... I will not leave my debt to my children and to my grandchildren." Then, he shot and killed himself in front of everyone.
Since the Greek bailouts have begun, suicide rates in the nation have went up 40%. The economic despair is driving people to their eternal doom. All of this is linked to austerity; all of this is linked to spending cuts. When will people realize that austerity does not work?
Well, the people of Greece are finally starting to wake up. They plan to have a protest later on today in the same square. A more viable economic plan must be put in place so that people no longer have to make suicide their final option.
