The tension between the United States and Iran over the latter’s controversial nuclear program refuses to die down as statements and counter statements from leadership of both the countries have escalated the issue to such an extent where immediate solution of the problem seems to be difficult. Iran’s Revolutionary Guards Commander Massoud Jazayeri was on Tuesday quoted by an Iranian newspaper as saying that Iran would launch an attack on the US if Iran came under attack from the country.
The commander threatened to attack each and every city of United States if an attack was launched on it under the pretext of destroying nuclear sites. The ambitious designs of Iranian civil and military leadership have put peace of the region at stake and that is the reason why Israel is also feeling threatened by nefarious designs of the country.
Two weeks back, Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said his country would attack Israel and/or the United States if something bad happens with Iran. He said this in his annual speech to mark Navroz – the Iranian New Year. Though it is not for the first time that Iran has threatened a severe backlash to Israel and the United States if they dared attacking nuclear sites of the country but such a threatening statement from the country’s supreme leader is meaningful.
During his speech, Ayatollah Khamenei also reiterated the country doesn’t possess nuclear weapons and nor intending to build them as suspected by the United States and Western countries. Intelligence agencies of both Israel and the US have already confirmed in their reports that Iran was not building nuclear weapons. And even if Iran wants to have atomic bomb, it will take at least three to four years to reach the stage. Ayatollah said the country was ready to retaliate the attack on its soil and its intensity would be the same with which its borders were invaded.
Israel and the United States have repeatedly threatened military action against Iran if the country fails to cease its alleged nuclear program. Peace lovers and liberals believe the issue can be resolved through dialogue. They also advise Iran to exercise restraint because the mere rhetoric will only incite Israel and the US against it. Israel is already in the state of paranoia that if Iran succeeds in acquiring nuclear weapons, the former’s existence will be endangered. That’s why Israel has been pushing the US for a military action against Israel to eliminate nuclear sites of the country.
Israeli Prime Ministerhad a detailed meeting with President Barack Obama in Washington D.C. three weeks back where the issue was discussed in detail. The US wants to resolve the issue through diplomatic means. However, the international community should seriously ponder on the statements by civilian and military leadership of Iran and look into repercussions of these statements as well.
