It was a routine check by the police in Virgin Island – they flagged down a passing car and asked the driver for her license. A woman was behind the wheel – she was from the city of St Croix.
As she rummaged through her bag to show her driving license the police officer heard the faint cry of a baby. But – there was no baby seat visible, nor any baby seat!!
When questioned, the woman unzipped the purse lying on the seat beside her showed the newborn – it was inside and was hardly a week old.
The woman explained that the baby was born at home without any prenatal care and she was taking it to a doctor.
The authorities immediately rushed the newborn to hospital and the woman might face criminal charges.
We have heard and even and seen various types of straps and slings of carrying newborns – but this one of putting it inside a purse must be a totally new concept.
