After Manchester City tied Sunderland 3-3 yesterday, City coach Roberto Mancini predicted that Manchester United would lose to Blackburn Rovers. That prediction was shattered today as United defeated Blackburn 2-0 at Ewood Park.
Man U went into their old bag of tricks and waited until late to score. Man United scored their first goal in the 81st minute when Antonio Valencia deked out a Blackburn defender down the right flank and powered the ball into the left side of the net.
United didn't stop there as reservescored in the 86th minute on a slicing shot into the lower right side of the net. Young was substituted into the match in the 80th minute, which shows why Sir Alex Ferguson is considered one of the best coaches in soccer history.
The win was very important for United because they are now five points ahead of City with seven games to go in the Barclays Premier League regular season. Blackburn's loss now puts them in the relegation zone. Their lack of depth may keep the Rovers in the relegation zone.
Here are the starting lineups from the match. Manchester United went with a 4-5-1 formation while Blackburn went with the traditional 4-4-2 format.
Manchester United -- Goalkeeper: De Gea. Defenders: Ferdinand, Rafael, Evans, Evra. Midfielders: Carrick, Rooney, Valencia, Scholes, Jones. Forward: Hernandez.
