It is Google tradition to play a prank every April fool’s day and 2012 was no exception. Google went all out for this one with professionally produced videos and a dedicated website. Now usually by April 2nd it is obvious that it was a joke, but not this time. In fact Google seems to be hinting that one day this all may become real.
When going to the site (gmail.com/tap) and after pressing the download button, you are taken to a page that has an "interesting" little phrase on it. "Oops! Gmail Tap is a bit too popular right now. We suggest you try downloading it again next year," now that does not sound like much, but if you press the Retry button you get something that sounds somewhat convincing. "Still trying to download Gmail Tap? Check back next April 1st to see if it is available...you never know," is what the next phrase reads.
So is this technology possible? The answer is yes! Now while you may never see the dual mode in our lifetime, it is quite possible to have a keyboard consisting of only a dot and a dash. In fact your grandpa may have used a version of this technology, it’s called: Morse Code! Yes, Morse Code seems to be a dying art, but if anybody could bring it back it would be Google. While it may not catch on with the majority since all you have to do these days is tell Siri what to write, I would imagine quite a few teenagers could get the hang of it in no time. The technology is definitely out there, Google already has language translator software, so why wouldn’t the software be able to translate Morse code to English?
Now I’m not saying Google is going to release such Software, I’m just saying that the latest April fool’s joke definitely seems to leave the idea in your head.
