The following day Collins made the announcement that Santana will be on the pitchers mound on Opening Day. The Thursday game is the season opener for the New York Mets as they face off against their division rival, the Atlanta Braves.
Santana is coming off shoudler surgery that was performed on him 19 months ago.
Collins said "After we talked to Johan yesterday after he threw. I walked by him and he said to me at the end, 'You've got your pitcher for Thursday.' "
Santana threw a brief bullpen session Saturday. He pitched his last spring training game on Monday versus the St. Louis Cardinals.
Santana said "It means a lot. It means that everything we've done from surgery to today has paid off. We worked hard, and I'm very happy."
