A giant wave crashed into the 68-foot yacht, the Geraldton Western Australia and seriously injured four of its crew members.

This was one of the yachts competing in the 40,000-miles Clipper Round the World Yacht Race which had started from Portsmouth in July-2012.

The incident occurred when the yacht was 400-miles from the coast of California in the Pacific Ocean.

The injured included three Britons and an Australian. The Britons were 29-year old Nik Brbora of London, 50-year old Jane Hitchens from Kent and 47-year old Mark Burkes of Worcestershire.

Jane has suffered four broken ribs while Mark has a back injury and Brbora, a software engineer, a possible pelvic sprain.

The fourth injured is 62-year old Max Wilson of Queensland who has cracked of broken ribs.

Rescue efforts by helicopters of the US Coastguards did not succeed because of the bad weather and strong winds.
