Cliff Muskiet, a purser of the KLM Royal Dutch Airways has a unique hobby – he collects uniforms of air hostesses (stewardesses) and boasts of an enviable collection of over 1000 such uniforms.
He has been at it for the last 30-years and his collection covers 426 different airlines. He has a website and details are accessible there for those who would want to learn more.
In his opinion, the uniforms down the years reveal the gradually changing fashion trends. Some airlines have roped in top design houses to design the uniforms so that they leave a lasting impression on the one who travels by that airline.
Examples are Giorgio Armani who designed uniforms for Alitalia, Nicci Ricci for Cathay Pacific and Christian Lacroix for Air France.
He is critical of the Qantas uniform of the 1980s - which was a creation of Yves Saint Laurent
Similarly for the Emirates which is the national carrier of the UAE – in his opinion, the color scheme is horrible but, the red veil is eye-catching.
