Ukrainian teen Oksana Makar, who died three weeks after a monstrous attack where she was gang-raped, half-strangled and then set on fire, has been buried in the village of Luch near the town of Mykolayiv.
In accordance to the Ukraine’s tradition, she had been buried in a wedding dress, and red roses laid on her white coffin.
Hundreds of tearful mourners came to say the last goodbye to the young women, who eventually succumbed to her injuries after miraculously surviving the brutal ordeal which left her with fifty-five percent of her skin burnt as well as her kidneys, and her arm and booth feet amputated.
The local media reported Oksana’s mother Tetyana Surovitska had spent the night besides her daughter coffin, and her step father Alex Surovitsky, who is currently serving a prison term, attended the funeral escorted by the police. The mother of Artyom Poghosyan, one of the attackers, who previously said she was to come to the girl’s funeral hadn’t showed up.
Regional officials also attended the funeral while the Ukraine’s President Viktor Yanukovych and the Prime Minister Mykola Azarov sent their condolences.
Brutal gang-rape case that shocked the world
Oksana Makar died only days after her mother posted a video of her speaking from the hospital bed. Obviously deeply traumatized and in a great pain, she had been trying to describe the ordeal but broke down, saying she didn’t want to talk about it. Asked how her perpetrators should be punished, the teen had said their testicles should be cut off and fed to dogs.
Makar had been found barely alive moaning for help on March 10 at a construction site in the Ukrainian city of Mykolayiv. She told the police that the day before she had been invited by two friends to another friend’s house, where all three men raped her, then tried to choke her to death, and, as she was still alive, finally wrapped her into a sheet, took to the construction site and set on fire.
Despite Oksana’s claims, the two of three attackers, both sons of former governmental officials, had been released shortly after the arrest with an excuse of the lack of evidence against them. However, as the case got publicity and sparked the mass protests, they have been re-arrested. Now, the two are being charged with gang rape and one with rape and attempted murder.
