A village policeman of the Yayakhil town of Yayakhil district in the Paktika province of Afghanistan woke up at 3 o’clock in the morning and shot dead nine officers as they slept.
He belongs to the Afghan Local Police (ALP) and shot them with an assault rifle and then collected the weapons of the dead officers in a pick-up vehicle and escaped.
The Taliban has claimed responsibility for the attack and has confirmed that the weapons of the slain officers have been handed over to them by the policeman.
The US-led military forces plan to leave Afghanistan by end 2014 after ending its combat mission but, with the present state of law and order in the country, it is doubtful whether the Afghans themselves are ready and can handle the volatile situation.
In 2012, till date, a total of 16 NATO persons have been shot and killed by Afghan soldiers – some of these attackers had been militants in the disguise of Afghan soldiers.
