The president of Somaliland Mr. A M Silanyo today received at the presidential palace in Hargeisa , a delegation from turkey lead by the Turkish Ambassador to Somalia Mr. KANI TORUN .The delegation of 6 members is visiting the country to explore and strengthen the bilateral relations between the two nations. The delegation also came to follow-up on the recent visit to Somaliland by the head of TIKA Somali Program Coordinator.
Somaliland presidential spokes-person, Mr. Abdillahi Ukuse said that “ the Turkish delegation have expressed their intention to support Somaliland in building schools and improving education , providing scholarships , assisting in health facilities , water resources and improving the basic infrastructure of Somaliland” .
The a delegation also promised to send to Somaliland , a group of experts to carry out needs assessment on the areas that the Turkish government wants to improve in Somaliland.
In addition , the delegation also said that they intend to build two Turkish schools in Somaliland and to implement periodic exchange of teachers of the two nations to enhance the experience of the education sector of Somaliland. The ambassador also promised that large Turkish companies will soon come to Somaliland to heavily invest in the business and industrial sectors.
This is the second Turkish delegation to visit Somaliland within a month.
Somaliland is an unrecognised self-declared state that is not internationally recognised . The government of Somaliland regards itself as the successor state to the British Somaliland protectorate, which was independent for a few days in 1960 as the State of Somaliland, before uniting with the Trust Territory of Somalia (the former Italian Somaliland) later the same week to form the Somali Republic . It declared independence from Somalia in May 18, 1991 after the fall of the late dicator , Siyad Barre .
