A couple from Sydney, Australia has received a bill for the birth of their child – It’s $1 million! Rachel Evans and John Kan were visiting Vancouver, British Columbia when Rachel went into laborearly. It happened at the airport just as they were getting ready to go back toAustralia.
The baby – a girl – was in the neo-natal unit of the B.C. Women’s Hospital for three months. That bill ended up being $1 million. They set up payment arrangements with the hospital at a steep $300 monthly amount. At that rate, it’s going to 278 years before the bill would be paid in full.
The foreign affairs minister in Australia is looking into the matter. The couple said that they aren’t upset with the hospital over the bill because little Piper Kan is healthy. That is not something you can easily put a price on. However, in terms of the couple’s finances, though, it’s a tough bill to swallow.
It’s not known yet what help the foreign ministry might be, but according to the local newspaper, theDepartment of health and Aging are looking into whether they may be able to pay the bill. Evans said that any help they could get from the government would be gratefully accepted. She said that she doesn’t feel that traveling to Vancouver was a mistake, but the bill is such a large amount from Piper’s birth, any assistance will help a lot.
Australian residents are eligible for medical treatments in 11 countries for any treatment that was deemed necessary. Unfortunately, there is no such agreement with Canada. Canada does offer freehealth care to its citizens; however, baby Piper is not eligible. Just because she was born in Canada does not make her a Canadian citizen. By law, the parents, or at least one of them, have to be a citizen of Canada. Since both are Australians, the baby is also considered a citizen of Australia.
