Helmand Afghanistan is site to some of the deadliest fighting in all of Afghanistan but the providence is also known for being the worlds largest producer of Opium. Although it comes as no surprise that the Taliban would protect their main means of income, The U.S has made it clear that the battle against the Taliban is also a war against Narcotics.
On Monday 1.2 Tons of Opium were seized by Afghani counter Narcotics forces in the volatile Helmand Providence, Three smugglers were detained.
92% of the worlds heroin can be traced to Afghanistan. Opium, the main ingredient in Heroin is the cash crop of many farmers in Afghanistan bringing back more of a profit then corn or wheat ever could.
Afghanistan is believed to produced in excess of 9 tons of opium a year but as is common in such a trade the Taliban is not the only one making profit off the trade. Corrupt Government officials are believed to have a say in the production and transportation of Opium granting safe passage ways. In return many of these elected officials receive commission a practice many in the west have condemned.
