Solar Tornado Recorded by NASA

At the National Astronomy Meeting in Manchester (UK) today, the public was able to see the video of the first solar tornado caught on tape.

What in the world is a solar tornado? A solar tornado is formed by the sun's magnetic field. When explosions occur on the surface of the sun, the solar gas that is released begins to swirl around like a tornado.

Solar tornadoes can easily reach a height of over 100,000 miles. The tornado that was shown in the video is 124,000 miles tall. The tornado travels at 186,000 mph.
