Graz, Styria in Austria

Report By: Nina Rai

Vienna, 26 March, 2012

Nearly everyone must have heard the saying ‘cutting one’s nose, to spite the face,’ but imagine cutting off your foot just to avoid going to work. Can anything be more bizarre than this?

But, this is precisely what happened to an out-of-work Austrian man who deliberately sawed his foot off, allegedly to evade a health check on whether he was fit to work or not, said the police.

According to the Austrian broadcasting service ORF, the 56-year old Austrian had the appointment on Monday for the labor office to check on his health.

However, with just an hour before the scheduled meeting, the Austrian got hold of an electric saw from his workshop at home. He then held his left leg against the electric saw and severed his foot just above the ankle.

Bleeding heavily, this guy from the province of Styria then clinically chucked off his foot into an oven. He then hobbled to his garage and called an ambulance.

When the police arrived at the scene the distressed Austrian was still conscious but had lost a lot of blood. He was immediately flown by plane to a hospital in Graz.

According to the police, emergency services had searched in the oven and were able to recover the foot. The severed foot was taken to the hospital but it was so badly burned that though an emergency operation was performed on the guy, the team of doctors were not able to reattach his foot. However, otherwise, his condition is said to be stable.

Great story Nina, I have not wanted to go to work before but not to this extent.

"He was flown by plane to a hospital in Graz, where he is said to be in a stable condition." I think they may want to re-evaluate that stable condition, obviously an over site there, the man is most assuredly not stable (in the mind anyway).

Thanks for sharing this one. Rated up!!!

I am still wondering why this guy
had to take such an extreme step.
Stable condition is as per the
police account. You are right, mentally
he can never probably be normal. May
have been an instant attack of
depression or fear of work.
A real unfortunate situation.

That's insane. Sometimes I hear rumors about men shooting themselves in the foot so they can come home from war.

Must have been a case of momentary
madness, he surely must be repenting
now. The above extreme cases of men
shooting themselves to get leave from
army indicates the futility of war...
wish we lived in a peaceful world.
Thanks so much for the feedback Caitlin.

Underlying causes of his extreme action need to further analyzed. Probably,he reached to conclusion, pain of sawed his foot off may be lesser than working environment. Great and surprising news. Rated ^^^

The guy is totally out of his mind. He should have shot himself and die instead of cutting his foot. It's more difficult to suffer pain and remain a vegetable for the rest of your life. I say again, he got a warp mind. rated

There are so many such weird cases happening
in the world. Mankind has no answers other
than to empathesize. Wish some one was there
with him, is all I will say.
