Former Vice Presidentunderwent a heart transplant on Saturday. Dick Cheney’s heart problems have been there since almost 25 years. He has suffered five heart attacks over the last two and a half decades and it was finally time to get a transplant.
Dick Cheney is 71-year-old and had to wait for almost two years for this miraculous surgery. His heart donor remains unknown.
After his surgery, an aide that disclosed the surgery after it was over said the ex-vice president was recovering at a Virginia hospital. Aide Kara Ahern said in a written statement, "Although the former vice president and his family do not know the identity of the donor, they will be forever grateful for this lifesaving gift."
Cheney was recovering Saturday night at the intensive care unit of Inova Fairfax Hospital in Falls Church, Va., after surgery earlier in the day.
More than 70 percent of heart transplant recipients live at least five years, although survival is a bit lower for people over age 65; hence the chances of a successful transplant are more than its failure. Almost 3100 Americans are still on a national waiting list to get a heart transplant. Only the fortunate ones get donors.
Dick Cheney has had five heart attacks since the age of 37. In January 2011, Cheney said he was getting by on the battery-powered heart pump, which made it "awkward to walk around." He also said he hadn't made a decision yet on a transplant, but "the technology is getting better and better."
Cheney said then that he'd "have to make a decision at some point whether I want to go for a transplant." He suffered congestive heart failure which means his heart was too weak to properly pump blood across the body.
Thankfully, his surgery was successful and he’s faring well so far. Dick Cheney’s family, friends and well-wishers are praying for a speedy recovery.
Former Massachusetts Gov., the front-runner for the Republican presidential nomination, wished Cheney a "fast and full recovery" in a post on Twitter. Former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum, Romney's chief challenger, sent a written statement wishing Cheney and his family well and offering his thoughts and prayers.
Get well soon Dick Cheney!
