They said it couldn’t be done, natural health advocates, but a group of activist organizations demonstrating at the Monsanto office in Davis California were successfully able to shut down the facility for one whole day as recently as last Saturday, March 17, 2012!
Upon necessitating a shutdown, the Davis Monsanto management instructed that their employees should stay away from work the facility for their own safety.
For a brief moment in history, the coalition of sponsors who supported the weekend demonstration included The Anti-Monsanto Project, Peace & Freedom Party, and Occupy Woodland/ Occupy Sacramento/ Occupy UC Davis.
Monsanto is constantly receiving negative press for its harmful chemical products that are used in various industries including agriculture, pest control and landscaping which cause as many problems, if not more, to the environment and our health as they provide any superficial benefit.
Their highly controversial and harmful line of products include DDT for pest-control as well as a biopesticide Bt (known to harm internal organs, specifically destroying kidney cells), rBGH (Bovine Growth Hormone) given to livestock for the production of milk, PCBs (which are now banned in the U.S.), herbicides Agent Orange and Roundup, as well as genetically-modified organisms (GMOs) which are bio-engineered to have pesticides in them to resist insects.
Monsanto has been faced with several law suits filed by various countries including Austria, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Poland and Switzerland yet it has received the full cooperation of the U.S. government due to its multi-million dollar lobbying activities in Washington DC, as well as close ties with the Food and Drug Administration and the White House itself.
The brave souls from the Anti Monsanto Project stated in an event posting in the Indy Bay that they were going to shut down the Monsanto in Davis, California, both on March 16 and 17 for their “negligent behavior towards gm foods, biopiracy in India, poisoning the food supply…and get Monsanto’s poison out of our country.” They kept their promise on Saturday March 17!
