British style fruit chutney is not the easiest thing to find at your local supermarket in metro Atlanta. But if you have no fruit chutney for that pork sandwich you’ve been craving? No problem – improvise with this easy recipe…
Just make sure you have apricot, peach or plum jam, an A1 style steak sauce (the generic one made by your local supermarket chain will do!) and raisins.
The steak sauce has enough pepper, cloves and other spices that you don’t really need to add even salt and pepper. Use it on pork, beef, mutton, chicken or other meat sandwiches.
Pork sandwich with improvised fruit chutney
Pork or other meat
Apricot, peach or plum jam
Raisins, rehydrated with hot water to plump up
Spread one side of the sandwich roll with as much jam as you like, layer on the sliced meat, top with plumped raisins and top off with a good drizzling of steak sauce.
The flavors meld so beautifully, you wont be able to tell you’re not using the "real deal" fruit chutney! Otherwise, just microwave raisins in some water, mix in the jam and steak sauce and spread on both sides of the bread.
Alternatively, you could butter one side of the roll and just spoon on the chutney mix over the meat… Works either way – enjoy!
