Adele Azarrucquoi shocked at reference to Black Power at New Black Panther Party press conference (c) 2012 by Harold Michael Harvey

Thursday afternoon at a press conference in Sanford, Fla., the New Black Panther Party for Self-Defense circulated a “wanted dead or alive” poster for George Zimmerman for shooting to death a Florida teenager four weeks ago.

Zimmerman, a self-proclaimed neighborhood watch captain, said he accosted what he alleges was a suspicious looking black male walking through his neighborhood. He further contends the man punched him and bloodied his nose, so Zimmerman fired a gun shot striking the man in the chest. The “man” was 17-year-old Trayvon Martin, who would lie in the county morgue three days before police alerted his parents of their child’s death.

Minister Mikhail Muhummud led the press conference, calling for the firing of Sanford Police Chief Bill Lee, the arrest of George Zimmerman and some involvement from President Obama. Muhummud stated he is the southern regional director for the New Black Panther Party for Self-Defense located in Jacksonville, Florida. While Minister Muhummud fired off a list of demands and expressed outrage over the handling of the shooting and subsequent investigation, a member of the group passed flyers to about 100 people who showed up for the press conference. Muhummud told the group he was not concerned with rumors of death threats to George Zimmerman: “He should be afraid for his life…” (SEE http://youtu.be/ZE_i9TELcfw)

Muhummud said, “I’m here today to appeal to the country, particularly President Obama, to do the right thing while you have the power.” He said that “Trayvon Martin symbolizes my son.”

President Obama had not addressed the issue, but had advised the Justice Department to open an investigation into the case. This morning following Muhummud’s press conference, President Obama spoke about the case for the first time publicly. He echoed the sentiments of Muhummud saying, “If I had a son, he would look like Trayvon...” (SEE http://youtu.be/efZNgSEpB1k).

When the group started chanting “Black Power,” Adele Azarucquoi, a white long time resident of Sanford shouted, “What about white people?”

Muhummud quickly said, “We don’t hate any group. We hate injustice. We appreciate the whites who have come forth to help us.”

There were fewer than a dozen whites, not counting media, among the mostly African American crowd. “I hope there are more people who look like me at the next rally for Trayvon’s family,” Ms. Azarucquoi said.

After the news conference, Azarucquoi told a journalist: “This heart of mine is sick when a kid gets killed because his skin is different from the skin of the guy who shoots him.”

She then requested that a journalist walk across the street with her to speak with Police Chief Bill Lee. Upon arrival at his office, the receptionist said he wasn’t in the office then said, "He hasn’t been in the office in several days.”

Later in the day Chief Lee announced he was temporarily stepping down.

Present at the news conference was Mildred Duprey de Robles, Conciliation Specialist for the United States Justice Department’s Office of Community Relations. Ms. Duprey de Robles declined to speak with the press other than to say she was there as an observer.

The Justice Department’s Office of Community Relations is mandated to help negotiate peaceful resolutions to community problems. She appeared to have gotten an earfu and left quickly when the press insisted on more communication from her.

Members of the public who came in support of the New Black Panther Party’s press conference were vocal in their outrage over the shooting and investigation. They called for the dismantling of “the good ole boy network.”

Pastor Paul Wright, whose 1,000-member church, Calvary Temple Praises, is several blocks from the police department, dropped by the press conference. When asked about the “wanted dead or alive” poster Pastor Wright said, “I don’t agree with that. We don’t need to set a precedent that this is the way to resolve problems.”

I wonder if Chief Lee is related to General Lee.

Adrian that is an interesting thought. I was wondering what the FBI would find hidden in the back of the chief's closet.

Or maybe Chief Lee is related to Bruce Lee? Or maybe Chief Lee is related to Chief Sitting Bull?
Reply By agatematt agatematt | about 1 year ago
Lee is a very common surname --- almost as common as Smith, Jones and Brown (or even Johnson, Carter or Clinton, for that matter) --- throughout the South and doesn't necessary means there is any direct connection with the family of Gen. Robert E. Lee. In fact, the odd are greatly against it.

As much as I want justice for this young man and I pray he gets it, The New Black Panthers are no better and it sounds like they are just posturing for publicity. The world is full of idiots. Here in Texas George Bush was criticized for James Byrd's death like he committed the crime himself. Those men got the death penalty and one has already been executed. How much more justice could there be for James Byrd? I pray that the parents here find peace and I hope some people are not blindsided that they can't see what was done to this young man. He deserves a voice. He deserves justice, but not though The New Black Panthers who like nothing better than to intimidate people including voters.

Zimmerman is hispanic...you moron. And before you go accusing him you might want to know:

What time did incident happen?
How far away from area did Treyvon live?
Was the neighborhood on the route to his house?
Was it too hot in Orlando for a hoodie?
Reply By CHBrown1966 CHBrown1966 | about 1 year ago
With all due respect atommcbomb, the time of the incident, the distance to Trayvon's home, the route of his walk, and the temperature has nothing to do with Zimmerman stalking him, following him, and gunning him down in cold blood. Trayvon was not a threat to Zimmerman. Trayvon was walking AWAY from Zimmerman. Zimmerman followed and relentlessly pursued him when the 911 operator specifically told him not to follow him. If someone is a threat to you, you will not be running to them or following them; you would be running away FROM them. Trayvon was doing nothing other than walking down the street talking on the cell phone with a bag of skittles and a bottle of tea in his hand. He was not a threat. He was not peeping into windows; he was not trying to break into cars. He was WALKING down the street. If he had a hoodie on in 100 degree weather, what's the difference. If it's his hoodie and he bought it, then he can wear it whenever and however he wants to wear it. Someone wearing a hoodie does not constitute a crime. If he lived 1,000 miles from the neighborhood that he was walking in, that's irrelevent. If he decided to take the long way home, that's his business. This is AMERICA. People can walk whenever, wherever, and however they please. Walking whenever, however, and wherever they please does not constitute a crime. The job of a neighborhood watch person is to WATCH and see if anything suspicious is going on and to call the police if they do. It is not the "chase people down, stalk them, and shoot them PROGRAM." Besides, out of the 22,000 neighborhoods registered under the neighborhood watch program, Zimmerman's name is not among any registered members. He was NOT a neighborhood watch volunteer. He is using that title as an excuse to gun down an innocent child. Anyone who can't see that is blind, crippled, and CRAZY!!!

How do you know the circumstances of what happened that night? Were you there? Nobody really knows what happened that night except Zimmerman. Everybody is so anxious to believe that this kid was so innocent and that Zimmerman was some gun-toting racist with a grudge. If I saw a person walking slowly down my street in a gated community with his hood up in the dark, I would be suspicious too. And so would you so give that holier then thou bull attitude. Everyone is calling for Zimmerman's head on a platter and saying Trayvon was killed because he was black but no one knows what transpired that night. Maybe you should keep an open mind next time you decide to run your mouth off!

Hispanic is not a race. There are white Hispanics and black Hispanics. George Zimmerman is half Caucasian and half white Hispanic. Your name-calling was unwarranted. It was raining in Orlando; I live here. It was not too hot to wear a cover since it was RAINING. Here in Florida we have the sense to put up our hoods in the rain if we don't happen to have an umbrella. Trayvon was just a couple of hundred yards from his father's place, which was IN the neighborhood. I'm posting this only so that people can be informed. Peace; I wish you well.

Reply By RocketRyder RocketRyder | about 1 year ago
Hispanic is not a race? What constitutes race in your mind and Have you alerted Hispanics? Because I can assure you, Hispanics are asked about race all the time. Like on employment applications, school documents, licenses, government documents, and census forms, and that's just for starters. They are usually asked if they are Hispanic/Latino, not "white hispanic" or "black hispanic", and by the way, I've seen Mr. Zimmerman. He does not appear caucasion...but neither does our current President, who is also half caucasion. I think what you meant to say is that Hispanic is not considered a race when it doesn't fit into the divisive national narrative that is being promoted by the media and of course, you.

@Kendra. Luke 6:45 clearly tells us that out of the abundance of the heart, the mouth speaks. It's not difficult to know what's in someone's heart if you listen to what's coming out of their mouth. Here are a few of Zimmerman's words on the 911 tapes: Zimmerman said, this guy looks like he's up to no good, he looks like he's on drugs, he says he has something in his hands and that he didn't know what his deal is, and that THEY always get away. He was then told NOT to follow Trayvon, but he follows him anyway. He then calls Trayvon an Effin Coon. Whether or not people consider this a racial slur or not, it's a negative comment showing that he had negative feelings towards Trayvon and all he was doing was walking. If someone thinks negative of a person and they are not doing anything wrong except walking down the street, why is that? Why is it that Zimmerman had negative feelings towards a person who was clearly walking away FROM him enough to call him an effing coon. Zimmerman's words clearly show what was in his heart. He didn't consider himself black. If he did, why would he refer to one of his own race as an "effin coon?" And then he said that "THEY" always get away. The word, "THEY" refers to someone else other than yourself. He didn't say that "WE" always get away; he said, "THEY" always get away. I know you must think that people are dumb as rocks and can't decipher the words of Zimmerman on the 911 tapes, or his motives, but ignorance is not a character trait that I possess. If you are looking for ignorance, you are looking in the wrong direction. We clearly hear the 911 operator telling Zimmerman NOT to chase Trayvon. If you follow someone, stalk them, and then pull out a gun on the, they should fight back. It's called SELF-DEFENSE! Wouldn't you defend yourself against someone who is following you, stalking you, and then pulls a gun out on you? Zimmerman even go to so close to Trayvon for them to get into a physical altercation and a scuffle as he claims. That's too close to be up on someone and not expect them to defend themselves. Wake up and join society because the rest of America is not asleep as you are. Does not Trayvon have the right to STAND HIS GROUND as some are trying to say that Zimmerman stood his ground? Who was the aggressor? Really. Who was following and stalking whom? Who was the threat? Was it a young teenager walking AWAY from someone following them and stalking them or would it be the one who is being stalked and followed? If Trayvon was such a threat, why was Zimmerman following him in a heated pursuit? If someone is a threat to me, I would be going in the opposite direction of that person, not going TO that person. So you can MISS ME all day long with all of those excuses that I keep hearing from you insinuating that Zimmerman was not wrong for killing Trayvon. Actually, you can just go ahead and MISS the entire African American race on that nonsense cause we aint trying to hear it....

The incident happened some time after 7pm on Feb 26. The high temperature in Sanford that day was 69 and the low was 52 so probably a little over 60 degrees at the time of the shooting. Definitely cold enough for a hoodie, especially for someone from Miami.

Reports of the cell phone conversation with his girl friend prior to the shooting report that he was trying to elude an unknown person who was following him. It seems reasonable that a person being followed in the dark by a stranger might take a circuitous route to his destination.

Seems like you went 0 for 4 on relevancy, but I am willing to give you more chances to display your ignorance.

I'll keep an open mind, but given that there is a convenience store on almost every corner...this kid making a long trip to get candy just doesn't pass the laugh test. In my city, if you walk one mile in any direction you'll pass at least 2 and sometimes >10 convenience stores and or gas stations.
Reply By atommcbomb atommcbomb | about 1 year ago
You didn't give information about his route. Was it on the way to the candy store? Since you want to be helpful...This time how about sourcing ... maybe even a google map.
Reply By atommcbomb atommcbomb | about 1 year ago
You didn't source any of your information. It is complete BS without a source.

What was the kid even doing in that neighborhood, which (according to a black resident) had had a number of crimes recently (including burglary and/or robbery, I believe)...by black perpetrators? Zimmerman had already stopped a crime in that neighborhood previously.

This kid was in that neighborhood after having been suspended from school for five days. What was up with that?

Cut it any way you want, jay, but a black kid with a hoodie on in a neighborhood that'd been plagued by crime from look-alikes is not a very bright move. The only questions here are A) what, exactly, transpired and B) was the shooting justifiable, given the circumstances?

All else is just left-wing political granstanding - which, judging by the national reaction thus far -- is NOT helping Barack Obama or liberalism in the least. They've already (and predictably) OVERPLAYED their hands, vastly and grossly.

It's become another 'cops acted stupidly' moment for Obama, who was already in serious political trouble.

Maybe another beer summit is in order...?

It doesn't matter the answers to your questions if the dispatcher told Zimmerman not to follow Trayvon Martin and he disregarded the dispatcher's advice. He took the law into his own hands trying to play Mr. Cop.
Reply By bman3304 bman3304 | about 1 year ago
Who cares if he didn't take the advice of the police department. It's a gated community... it's private property, he doesn't have too. what part of that don't you understand? Joe Horn didn't take the advice of police and he did the right thing as well. Plus the courts sided with him. You people rush to judgement without the facts (liberal way).

Each day we learn something new about this case. You know what learn means right?

1. Little Tayvon was more "gansta" with his gold teeth than those outdated photos have suggested and he's much bigger too. America doesn't see those photos on the news. The ones that actually represent Martin today vs when he was a child.

2. Zimmerman mentors black teens, racists don't do that. There's a difference between being a racist and being tired of blacks stealing from you. Learn it, it may save your life one day!

3. Tayvon was suspended for 10 days, not 5. Being tardy does not warrant a 10 days suspension. Fighting or drug offenses do. Also as a result of the suspension little "Ta Ta" was sent to his fathers and was grounded.

4. Why is it that Trayvon's father (who grounded Tayvon) didn't know he was missing for 3 days after the shooting until he was notified by the Orange County coroners office?

5. Why did Tayvon's parents have their attorney seal his school records, specifically the suspension?

There are always 2 sides to every story and you cannot accept one side as fact without hearing the other. And if I'm a betting man, my money is on Zimmerman being exonerated of all wrong doing.
Reply By atommcbomb atommcbomb | about 1 year ago
doesn't matter? You go ahead and keep your head in the sand. Don't let the facts get in the way. As far as letting the police take care of things that is fine, but they didn't show up in time to take over the pursuit.
