It seems it was an intentional act of the CIA, a controlled experiment carried out at the peak of the Cold War. The Americans had introduced the hallucinogenic drug LSD into the local food to study its effects on human beings.
It was on 16th of August 1951 that a village in southern France faced the sudden case of mass insanity and hallucinations – hundreds fell victims to this syndrome and while at least five persons died, dozens more were put away in asylums.
The ‘disease’ was put down to be a case of some sort of poisoning through a psychedelic mould.
However, an American investigative journalist has unearthed the truth and solved the 50-year old mystery.
