An earthquake of 7.4 magnitude on the Richter scale was recorded in Mexico – its epicenter was near the Pacific coast of Acapulco – the resort town.

Malia Obama, eldest daughter of President Obama was in Mexico on a holiday about 100 miles from the epicenter – she and her friends are reported to be safe.

The residents of Acapulco have reportedly not felt any tremor and this is confirmed by the Mexican President Felipe Calderon who has said through is Twitter account that there is no report of any serious loss to lives or property.

It seems the quake was stronger in Mexico City proper where hundreds of homes (at least 500) have been damaged cell-phones went on the blink and traffic snarls were seen on the roads soon after the quake.

Mexico had been hit hard by a devastating earthquake in 1985 when thousands had lost their lives.
