Yes, the world’s new heavyweight champion is from Parua Bay New Zealand – tipping the scales at an astonishing 712-Kg it is a giant pumpkin of the American giant variety.

It won the honours and a cash prize of $200 for its Northland growers at a ‘giant pumpkin’ festival and its nearest rival was one which weighed 239-Kg.

Mrs. Eve Barton, the delighted woman, had planted the seed in end October-2011 and it matured in just 95-days. In this period, the pumpkin kept growing at an average rate of 15-Kg every day!!

Mrs Barton is trying to figure out whether the huge growth was due to the American seeds or the race horse manure that she had been feeding to the soil.

She had already won an award two years earlier for a pumpkin which weighed 364-Kg – obviously, she is an expert in sizes.
