It was a miraculous escape for 20-year old Billy O’Leary when he fell on top of a shark while performing the ‘floater’ during surfing off Gold Coast.

He was performing a trick maneuver known as the ‘floater’ when he slipped from his surf board and landed right on top of the shark.

The suddenness of finding a man on its back must have caught the shark by surprise and it bit him as a reflex action.

The chief lifeguard has commented that it was most probably a bull shark which had entered the murky waters attracted by the baitfish.

Already, the lifeguards had issued warnings about the sighting of a shark and those in the waters were trying to get back to the shores.

Billy suffered deep lacerations on his legs and has been shifted to the hospital for treatment.
