Ukrainian teen gang rape victim speaks out from hospital bed

A video of a Ukrainian teen Oksana Makar, who miraculously survived an ordeal of a gang rape, choking and being set on fire, has emerged online, sparking even grater outrage over the monstrous case.

Filmed and interviewed by her mother, Tetyana Surovitska, the girl is repeatedly being prompted to “say a few words to Ukraine”, and to show her amputated hand. Obviously deeply traumatized and in a great pain, she starts to describe the ordeal but breaks down, saying she doesn’t want to talk about it. Asked how her perpetrators should be punished, the teen says their testicles should be cut off and fed to dogs.

The video has not only additionally sparked even greater outrage on the brutality of the attack and the corruption of the Ukrainian authorities (who initially released the two of the attackers claiming there was no enough evidence only to imprison them again after the case got a publicity), but also provoked a disguise on her mother’s decision to have her filmed and repeatedly asked about the ordeal she went through. Many viewers on YouTube said the video was almost as a second rape of the girl.

Oksana Makar has been found barely alive moaning for help on March 10 at a construction site in the Ukrainian city of Mykolayiv. She told the police that the day before she had been invited by two friends to another friend’s house, where all three men raped her, then tried to choke her to death, and, as she was still alive, finally wrapped her into a sheet, took to the construction site and set on fire.

As a consequence, fifty-five percent of her skin has been burnt as well as her kidneys, and her arm and booth feet have been amputated.

Despite Oksana’s claims, the two of three attackers, both sons of former governmental officials, had been released shortly after the arrest with an excuse of the lack of evidence against them. However, as the case got publicity and sparked the mass protests, they have been re-arrested and now all three are being charged with attempted murder.

Oksana’s mother says before the March 9 her only daughter was like every other teenager – she wanted to become an actress or a singer and she liked going to disco. Today, when asked about her future, Oksana only says “How I will live, I will live. That’s all”.

A video of a Ukrainian teen Oksana Makar, who miraculously survived an ordeal of a gang rape, choking and being set on fire, has emerged online, sparking even grater outrage over the monstrous case. While the public cries for death penalty, another reportedly leaked video of interrogation of one of the suspects shows him calmly describing the monstrous torture saying `he tried to choke the gril to make her shut up', since she was still alive he went looking for a rope `to finish what he began', and eventually decided to end her life somewhere else as his parents were coming back to the house.
