
The actor George Clooney was detained for taking part in a protest at the Sudanese Embassy in Washington, the Associated Press. Together with the actor, police arrested his father, journalist Nick Clooney, and several other activists.
The protesters blocked the entrance to the embassy. After three police officers warned them about the inadmissibility of their actions, the activists were arrested.
Clooney made this action because he would like to draw attention to a humanitarian catastrophe, which, in their opinion, provoking Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir. Al-Bashir prevents supplies of food and humanitarian assistance, closing the border with South Sudan.
As noted by The Guardian, before the action Clooney expressed his hope that the police would arrest him.
Even being handcuffed, the actor told reporters: "Stop rape and starve the innocent Sudanese children. That's all we ask."
Two days before the protest Clooney returned from Sudan. He spoke before the Senate Foreign Affairs Committee, describing the violence in the Nuba Mountains - a region on the border with South Sudan. In addition, he raised the issue during a meeting with U.S. President Barack Obama.
After spending several hours in police custody Clooney was released the actor paid a fine of U.S. $ 100.
After his release, Clooney spoke to reporters, in particular, reported that this is the first arrest in his life. "And hopefully the last," - said the actor.
Clooney and other activists staged a protest against the fact that the Sudanese president closes border with South Sudan, making it difficult to supply food back and other humanitarian assistance. Protesters blocked the entrance to the embassy, despite repeated warnings from the police.
