In a shocking development, the filmmaker responsible for one of the world's most popular viral videos has now been placed in psychiatric care, after being found on the streets naked, screaming and banging his fists on Thursday morning, in an apparent melt-down.
33-year-old Russell’s 30-minute documentary on the Ugandan gangsterbecame an online sensation last week. In just over a week, 80 million plus people had seen the Kony 2012 YouTube video produced by American charity Invisible Children. The video even got massive support from Hollywood celebrities like , George Clooney and others who helped in promoting it.
Police in San Diego, California held Jason Russell for alleged drunken and lewd behavior. Russell was even found to be damaging cars during his apparent frenzied behavior, according to Andra Brown, San Diego Police Lieutenant.
However, Lt. Brown clarified that the filmmaker was not arrested, due to the nature of his detention. "During the evaluation we learned we probably needed to take him to a medical facility because of statements he was saying," informed Brown.
TMZ, a celebrity gossip website has posted a video allegedly that of Russell at a junction, screaming abuses and aggressively jabbing the pavement. Quoting Sources TMZ reported on Thursday that "Russell was dancing around the Intersection of Ingraham and Riviera wearing 'speedo-like underwear'...and eventually removed the underwear and began to make sexual gestures."

According to the website Russell has been put under a section known as "5150 psychiatric hold" whereby authorities can make an assessment of his mental state. Under this legal provision medical experts are permitted to detain patients up to three days to ascertain if they pose a threat to themselves or others.
Meanwhile, a senior official for the San Diego-based charity Invisible Children explained away Russell's weird behavior on his work load while promoting the film, which has been lampooned as being rather 'simplistic'. CEO Ben Keesey clarified "Jason Russell was unfortunately hospitalized suffering from exhaustion, dehydration and malnutrition."
According to Keesey the past two weeks had taken a huge “emotional toll” on all of them, particularly Jason Russell and “that toll manifested itself in an unfortunate incident," he added. Police department sources hinted that Russell was possibly under the influence of something.
However, his better half Danica in a statement released later, has flatly denied her husband being involved in any kind of substance abuse. Her statement read: “(Jason) has never had a substance abuse or drinking problem and this episode wasn't caused by either of those things." According to her, Russell did some rather irrational things which were “brought on by extreme exhaustion and dehydration," Danica claimed.
