Clooney was arrested and handcuffed for demonstrating outside the Sudanese Embassy together with his father journalist, Martin Luther King III, NAACP President Ben Jealous, Representative (D-Mass), Representative Jim Moran (D-VA), and former congressman Tom Andrews.
Clooney is recognized as an ardent political activist. This protest was against the blockage of food and aid from entering the Nuba Mountains area of Sudan and the suffering of the civilian population, according to a report by msnbc.
In a speech to the gathering crowd Clooney said, “we need immediate humanitarian aid into Sudan before it becomes the worst humanitarian crisis in the world.”
The top Obama administration official for Sudan Princeton Lyman spoke Tuesday announcing that the Sudanese president Bashir would visit the Southern Sudan; however, the strained tensions between the North and South could reignite one of the bloodiest wars in Africa, reported by Reuters.
"The two countries decided to step back from the brink. They looked at each other and said we are going in the wrong direction," Lyman told the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.
"We have seen these recommitments before. So while we take a great deal of hope from them, a lot will depend on what happens over the next several weeks."
Thursday's testimony before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee featured Hollywood star George Clooney - a longtime activist on the Sudan issue - who said Washington must get tough on Bashir and two other Sudanese officials indicted by the International Criminal Court as part of an investigation into atrocities in Darfur from August 2003 to March 2004.
Clooney said violence between Sudanese soldiers and rebels aligned with South Sudan in border areas including South Kordofan's Nuba mountains involved repeated attacks on unarmed civilians who already face a serious humanitarian crisis.
"They are proving themselves to be the greatest war criminals of this century, by far," Clooney told the panel, calling for increased U.S. efforts to find and freeze offshore accounts of indicted Sudanese officials.
Clooney showed the committee a video of the grim reality of the civilian population who are fighting to survive in what amounts to a war zone.
Friday’s demonstration with Clooney and others is an attempt to bring world and media attention to the crisis before it’s too late.
