Carmen McRae Summertime

A lonely tear from one who couldn’t cry

This child alone to wander through its night

To search alone the reason for its plight

Such loneliness enshrouds its quest of why

Was no one else to guide it to some sight

Such emptiness that didn’t even try

As solitudes of shadows drifted by

Forlorn not even echoes knew its blight

Tomorrow is a hopeless dream away

It journeys its redundancy unknown

What heartbreak now awaits this precious jewel

Yet still it lingers through its bleak dismay

Still searching ever searching for its own

Here waiting in a warm yet lonely pool
