The East Regional game between the #1 seeded Syracuse Orangemen (31-2) and the #16 seeded UNC-Asheville Bulldogs (24-9) will be taking place today at 3:10 PM EST. This game of the NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament will be played at the CONSOL Energy Center in Pittsburgh.
No 16th seeded team has won a game in the history of this tournament. However, the Bulldogs may have an outside chance to win if they are hitting their three-point shots. Playing against the patented 2-3 zone of Syracuse will give UNC-Asheville plenty of opportunities for shots. If guards Matt Dickey (16.5 ppg) and JP Primm (15.3 ppg) get going from behind the arc, then anything is possible.
Syracuse has posted an impressive record even though the team has gone through plenty of turmoil. Now, C Fab Melo will not be allowed to play in the tournament due to eligibility issues. Nevertheless, all of the trouble has made this team even tougher. For a team that plays zone, this Syracuse team plays defense rather well. Their athleticism allows for less openings within their zone. Plus, they have plenty of players that can score on the offensive end: forwards Kris Joseph, C. J. Fair, and James Southerland, and guards Dion Waiters, Brandon Triche, and Scoop Jardine.
