Skooter reporting 03/15/12

Late last week Zohair al-Qaisi, militant leader of the Popular Resistance Committee, was killed when Israel launched a targeted air strike at Gaza. The group claimed that it was planning a terrorist strike in Israel.

In the next few days, militant groups in Gaza unleashed hundreds of rockets into southern Israel in reprisal but Israel returned with new rounds of air strikes utilizing their new anti-missile system known as Iron Dome. It claims to have shot down more than 40 rockets.

Egypt intervened to help negotiate a cease-fire that began yesterday, and held for about a day, but both sides have since instigated limited attacks. Overall, eight Israelis have been wounded in the fighting, and at least 27 Palestinians have been killed.
