United States: the anti-smoking laws have saved lives

The anti-smoking measures taken in the U.S., such as increased taxes on cigarettes and the implementationof information campaigns, have prevented an estimated 800,000 deaths from lung cancer from 1975 to 2000, according to a study released Wednesday.



If all Americans had quit after the first warning against the dangers of tobacco in 1964 issued by U.S. health authorities, 2.5 million people in total were not died prematurely in the 36 years that followed, accordingthe authors of this analysis.



The study was funded by the American Institute of Cancer (NCI), appears in the journal published by thefederal agency. These researchers were able toreconstruct their detailed model of cigaretteconsumption by people born between 1890 and 1970.They then applied a computer model of the frequencyof lung cancers in this group
