A Mango for the Teacher, A Memoir of Cancún's Early Days, Is Released by Xicalango Press
(TRAVPR.COM) USA - March 14th, 2012 - Visitors to Cancún, the Mayan Riviera and the entire Yucatán often wish they had seen the peninsula before its dazzling beaches, ancient ruins and remote jungle became “features” for a network of mega-resorts. On March 23rd 2012, Xicalango Press will release A Mango for the Teacher: Running the Beach and Running a School in Cancún’s Early Days. This memoir will plunge readers into the clear waters of Yucatán’s times gone by. An upbeat tale of adventure, languages and romance, A Mango is the work of California writer-educator Deborah Susan Frisch.
With a keen eye for the natural world and an ear for the humor in Mexican speech, Frisch pilots readers through harrowing and hilarious encounters with sharks, con men, tarantulas and a president. Pen-and-ink illustrations by Frisch’s son, artist Arturo Avila, add another dimension to the story.
Frisch earned a master’s degree in teaching English as a Second Language at NYU. Then New York City’s budget crisis of the ’seventies left her jobless. In the meantime Frisch lost the three people to whom she felt closest. So the day after her last public school job ended in 1975, the 27-year-old drove out of Brooklyn and south to Cancún. There she founded and ran a popular language school for Mexican adults. Thirteen successful years later, Frisch nevertheless returned to the states with her young son. She settled in the SF Bay Area, where she continues teaching ESL. She also produces innovative language-learning materials, writes for children and adults, and speaks at educators’ conferences.
“Deborah had a knack for giving people the kind of English classes that worked for them,” says Lorraine Lara, former US Consular Agent to the Mexican State of Quintana Roo. “During its 25-year run, thousands of people learned English at Escuela Xicalango. Cancún should erect a statue of her.”
A Mango for the Teacher is available as a paperback for $13.99, or as an e-book for $3.99 on Kindle, nook, Smashwords or iBook formats. The book can be purchased through Amazon, Deborahsusanfrisch and Xicalangopress.
