The United States ranked ridicule the announcement by Syrian President Bashar al-Assad to holdparliamentary elections on May 7.

"Legislative elections for a parliament that is just asounding board, through the violence we see in thecountry is ridiculous," said a spokesman for the State Department, Victoria Nuland.

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad on Tuesdayannounced the convening of a general election for May 7, at the time that the international envoy Kofi Annanstill awaits an answer to their "concrete proposals" toend the violence, which caused more 34 deaths.

Also on Tuesday, at least 34 people died across thecountry, mostly soldiers and members of security forces victims of rebel attacks, according to theopponent OSDH
